INSTITUTIONAL INTERNATIONALIZATION

With increased visibility, the Graduate Program in Forest Sciences (PPGCF) has been attracting international students seeking master's and doctoral qualifications. The PPGCF has actively worked to attract foreign students through specific calls for applications such as PEC-PG/CAPES-CNPq, OAS (Organization of American States), among others.

The PPGCF maintains academic exchanges between its faculty and professors from other countries, particularly Spain, Germany, the United States, Chile, and Cuba.

The PPGCF also participates in the “Ibero-American Forest Research Network” Project, which has been incorporated into the Native Forest Management line, continuing the collaboration between the Graduate Programs of UFRPE (Brazil), Universidad de Córdoba (Spain), and Universidad de Pinar del Río (Cuba). It is worth mentioning that in 2017, Professor Rinaldo Luiz Caraciolo Ferreira conducted a technical visit to Universidad de Córdoba.

The PPGCF also hosted Professor Daniel Alberto Alvarez Lazo from the Department of Forest Engineering at Universidad de Pinar del Río, Cuba, through the CAPES Foreign Visiting Professor Program, with a senior scholarship from December 1, 2011, to November 30, 2012, which was later extended until November 30, 2013. During this period, Professor Lazo engaged in both research and teaching activities. He also supervised the doctoral student Expedito Baracho Júnior, whose thesis was defended in February 2016. Additionally, this visiting professor contributed to the undergraduate program by teaching the course "Physical and Mechanical Properties of Wood" (120 hours/year) and advising students, as evidenced by abstracts presented at the 13th Teaching, Research, and Extension Conference (XIII Jornada de Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão) at UFRPE. With the doctoral defense of Ouorou Ganni Mariel Guera on July 6, 2017, Professor Daniel concluded his co-supervision and his academic participation in the PPGCF.

The INNOVATE Project – “Interaction between Multiple Uses of Water Reservoirs through Innovation in Certain Substance Cycles in Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems” – was incorporated into the Planted Forest Management line and has been developed since 2012 in partnership with Brazilian institutions and German universities. The project is funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology and the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The PPGCF/UFRPE plays a significant role in this project, with the vice-coordination under the responsibility of Professor José Antônio Aleixo da Silva (who completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Technical University of Berlin in 2012/2013, as part of this project), alongside the participation of other faculty members and doctoral students. In 2017, Professor José Antônio Aleixo da Silva also conducted a technical visit to the aforementioned university.

It is also noteworthy that in 2015, with the participation of Visiting Professor Sorin Christian Pospecu from Texas A&M University, via a CAPES call for proposals, it was possible to submit a PDSE (Sandwich Doctorate Abroad) application to CNPq for the doctoral student Cinthia Pereira de Oliveira. Although the application was approved, it remained on the waiting list. This highlights the importance and potential benefits of international exchanges facilitated by visiting professors.
